How the Power Score adds up
Each pillar's score multiplied by its WCRC weight. The segments sum to 77.78.
BMW's power is first a matter of identity. Brand Positioning & Recall is its strongest WCRC pillar at 83.4, and within it Visual Identity Distinctiveness scores 92, its highest mark. The blue and white roundel and the twin kidney grille are recognised without a word of text, and the 'Ultimate Driving Machine' and 'Freude am Fahren' lines have defined the brand's promise for decades. Positioning Clarity & Coherence scores 90 and Unaided Brand Recall 88: when people think of a premium car built for driving, BMW is one of the first names they give.
Product backs up the image. Product, Innovation & Delivery is its second pillar at 80.0. BMW is among the world's largest corporate R&D investors, and 2026 is the year its Neue Klasse platform reaches customers, led by the new iX3 built in Debrecen, Hungary. More than 40 new and updated models are planned through 2027, and battery-electric cars made up 17.9% of deliveries in 2025. The M, i and motorcycle lines show the brand can stretch without losing focus, and its connected-car platform sends over-the-air updates to cars in 70 countries.
The weaker side is momentum and money. Group revenue fell 6.3% to EUR133.5bn in 2025 on deliveries of 2.46 million vehicles, and in June 2026 BMW halved its automotive margin guidance for the year to 1-3%, prompting Moody's to move its A2 rating outlook to negative. Sentiment Trajectory is its weakest parameter at 62, and the share price fell about 31% over the year. BMW's power today rests on a design language and driving promise strong enough to outlast a difficult cycle, with the Neue Klasse as the test of whether results catch up.
Why BMW ranks #29
BMW's brand power comes from a visual identity few companies can match, a positioning that has stayed clear for decades, and high recall wherever premium cars are sold. Brand Positioning & Recall, at 83.4, is its strongest WCRC pillar.
1.10Visual Identity Distinctiveness92
Visual Identity Distinctiveness: the roundel, the kidney grille and the 'Hofmeister kink' window line make a BMW recognisable at a glance. It is BMW's highest-scoring parameter, at 92.
1.01Positioning Clarity & Coherence90
Positioning Clarity & Coherence: 'Freude am Fahren', sold abroad as 'The Ultimate Driving Machine', has anchored the brand on driving pleasure for decades, and the Neue Klasse keeps that focus in the electric era.
1.02Unaided Brand Recall88
Unaided Brand Recall: BMW sold 2.46 million vehicles in 2025 and is one of the first names people give for premium cars across Europe, the Americas and Asia.
The Achilles' heel
2.09Sentiment Trajectory (12-Month Trend)62
Sentiment Trajectory (12-Month Trend) scores 62, BMW's lowest. In June 2026 it halved its automotive margin guidance to 1-3%, Moody's moved its outlook to negative and the share price fell about 31% over the year. A promotional ad pushed to car screens by over-the-air update also drew backlash.
What would move it: A strong Neue Klasse launch with clear delivery and margin progress, plus a firm commitment to keep advertising out of the car, would turn the trend.
The 2026 story
2026 brought a new leader and a new generation of cars. Milan Nedeljković succeeded Oliver Zipse as chairman of the board of management on 14 May. Production of the Neue Klasse, led by the BMW iX3, ramped up in Debrecen on two shifts, the first of more than 40 new and updated models due through 2027.
Results were weak. For 2025 BMW Group revenue fell 6.3% to EUR133.5bn, EBIT fell 11.5% to EUR10.2bn and net profit was EUR7.45bn. In June 2026 BMW warned on profit, halving its 2026 automotive EBIT margin guidance to 1-3% as tariffs and a soft Chinese market bit. Moody's moved its A2 outlook to negative.
The share price fell about 31% over the year. The risk is that a long downturn in China and trade barriers erode the premium BMW can charge. The opportunity is that the Neue Klasse, with strong early demand for the iX3, gives the brand its most important product launch in a generation.

WCRC analysis
BMW Group revenue rose from EUR111.2bn in 2021 to a peak of EUR155.5bn in 2023, helped by the full consolidation of its Chinese joint venture from 2022, then fell two years in a row to EUR133.5bn in 2025. EBIT followed the same arc, peaking at EUR18.5bn in 2023, an 11.9% margin, before dropping to EUR10.2bn, or 7.6%, in 2025.
The table shows a brand past a cyclical peak. Pricing power held well into 2023, but tariffs, weaker demand in China and the cost of the electric transition have since cut both sales and margin. BMW's brand strength has not prevented that slide, which is why the Neue Klasse matters so much to its next five years.
BMW is the second-highest Automotive & Mobility brand in the WCRC World's Most Powerful 100 Brands 2026, ranked #29 with a WCRC Power Score of 77.78. Ferrari ranks higher, at #10.
