What makes Guinness powerful

Guinness is powerful because nothing else looks, pours or tastes quite like it, and people have made that difference part of their culture. In the WCRC World's Most Powerful 100 Brands 2026 its strongest pillar by far is Brand Positioning & Recall at 87.3, among the highest in the ranking. Brand Differentiation Index scores 94 and Positioning Clarity & Coherence 92. Few brands in any category can point to a product ritual, the two-part pour and the settle, that customers wait for and film.

The second driver is relevance to a new generation. Cultural & Contextual Relevance scores 92: 'splitting the G' became a social media habit among younger drinkers, and Guinness 0.0 became the fastest-growing and number one non-alcoholic beer in Great Britain. Packaging & Sensory Brand Experience scores 89, because the glass, the harp, the colour and the creamy head are the brand.

Momentum makes the case. In Diageo's year to 30 June 2026, Guinness net sales rose 12% on an organic basis, with double-digit growth in Great Britain, share gains in Ireland and growth in the United States and Canada, while Diageo's total organic net sales fell 2%. Sentiment Trajectory scores 90. The limits are structural: Guinness has little direct online selling because of alcohol rules, and it shares Diageo's balance sheet, where operating profit fell 27% after exceptional items. That keeps Digital Presence & Financial Soundness at 71.8.

Why Guinness ranks #28

Guinness's three highest-rated strengths are about the product itself and what people do with it: it stands apart, it carries its identity in every glass, and it keeps finding new fans.

  1. 1.04Brand Differentiation Index94

Brand Differentiation Index: a dark stout with a two-part pour and a creamy head is unlike any mainstream beer, and drinkers know it on sight.

  2. 3.06Packaging & Sensory Brand Experience89

Packaging & Sensory Brand Experience: the glass, the harp, the black and cream colours and the settling pint carry the brand without a word on the label.

  3. 1.08Cultural & Contextual Relevance92

Cultural & Contextual Relevance: younger drinkers turned 'splitting the G' into a social ritual, and Guinness 0.0 became Great Britain's number one non-alcoholic beer.

The Achilles' heel

5.04E-Commerce & Digital Commerce Capability60

E-Commerce & Digital Commerce Capability scores 60, one of Guinness's lowest results. Alcohol rules limit direct online sales in many markets, so Guinness depends on pubs, retailers and Diageo's distribution rather than its own digital channels.

What would move it: More owned digital commerce where the law allows it, such as merchandise, gifting, the Guinness Storehouse and Microdraught, would lift this score and give the brand more first-party customer data.

The 2026 story

Guinness was the bright spot in a hard year for its owner. In Diageo's fiscal 2026, to 30 June, Guinness organic net sales grew 12% and reported net sales 11%, with double-digit growth in Great Britain and gains in Ireland, the US and Canada. Diageo as a whole saw reported net sales fall 3% to US$19.6bn.

Demand has outrun supply, so Diageo is spending on capacity. Its US$1.2bn of net capital expenditure in fiscal 2026 included Guinness supply expansion. Guinness 0.0 grew by double digits in Great Britain. Diageo also sold its stake in Guinness Ghana Breweries in July 2025, after selling Guinness Nigeria the year before, and AB InBev began brewing Guinness under licence in China in 2025.

The risks sit mainly with the parent. Diageo's operating profit fell 27% after exceptional items, net debt stands at 3.1 times adjusted EBITDA, and the full-year dividend was cut from 103.48 to 50 US cents. Under chief executive Sir Dave Lewis, investors are asking how the portfolio should be reshaped, which keeps Guinness at the centre of the debate as Diageo's strongest growth asset.

WCRC analysis

Diageo's reported net sales have edged down from US$20.5bn in fiscal 2022 to US$19.6bn in fiscal 2026. Reported operating profit peaked at US$6.0bn in fiscal 2024, then fell to US$4.3bn and US$3.2bn mostly because of large exceptional charges and weaker trading across the group.

The table describes the parent, not the brand. Inside that flat picture Guinness grew net sales 12% organically in fiscal 2026, so its share of Diageo is rising. That is the clearest sign of its power: a beer outgrowing the spirits group that owns it, at the moment its owner most needs a winner.
