#32 Toyota
Toyota is ranked #32 in the WCRC World's Most Powerful 100 Brands 2026, with a WCRC Power Score of 77.51, the highest of any volume carmaker. As the world's best-selling automaker, with a reputation for reliability and a balance sheet built for long cycles, it is recalled and chosen in almost every market.

How the Power Score adds up
Each pillar's score multiplied by its WCRC weight. The segments sum to 77.51.
Toyota's power is built on scale and dependability. It sold 9.595 million vehicles in the year to March 2026, up 2.5%, and remains the world's best-selling automaker. That reach makes it one of the few car brands people name unprompted on every continent, and Unaided Brand Recall is its strongest WCRC parameter. Toyota scores 83.0 on Brand Positioning & Recall, its best pillar, built on a clear and long-held promise of quality and reliability.
The second driver is choice. Toyota offers the broadest line-up in the industry, from the Corolla to the Century, across hybrid, petrol, battery-electric and hydrogen powertrains. Its bet on hybrids, once criticised as slow, has paid off as electric-car demand cooled in several markets. First-Choice Consumer Preference is among its top three parameters, and Toyota scores 77.8 on Product, Innovation & Delivery and 77.2 on Consumer Trust & Sentiment. Lexus, Century and the Gazoo Racing performance line are being run as distinct brands around it.
Third, Toyota has the financial strength to absorb shocks. Sales revenues reached a record JPY50.7 trillion in fiscal 2026, and its investor relations page lists ratings of A+ from S&P and A1 from Moody's. That strength was tested this year: US tariffs cut operating income by JPY1.38 trillion and operating income fell 21.5% to JPY3.77 trillion. The weaker areas are digital. Toyota scores 76.0 on Digital Presence & Financial Soundness and only 69.0 on Sustainability, Governance & ESG, where group certification-testing irregularities and a slower move to battery-electric cars weigh on its record. Its weakest parameter is E-Commerce & Digital Commerce Capability, because most cars are still sold through dealers.
Why Toyota ranks #32
Toyota's three strongest WCRC parameters show a brand that is known everywhere, financially secure and the default choice for millions of buyers.
1.02Unaided Brand Recall92
Unaided Brand Recall: as the world's largest automaker by volume, with 9.595 million vehicles sold in fiscal 2026, Toyota is a name drivers recall unprompted in almost every market.
5.07Financial Stability Indicator90
Financial Stability Indicator: Toyota's investor relations page lists ratings of A+ from S&P and A1 from Moody's, and the company earned record sales revenues of JPY50.7 trillion in fiscal 2026.
2.04First-Choice Consumer Preference86
First-Choice Consumer Preference: Toyota has been the world's best-selling carmaker for years, and its hybrids are first choice for buyers who want lower fuel use without changing how they drive.
The Achilles' heel
5.04E-Commerce & Digital Commerce Capability60
E-Commerce & Digital Commerce Capability scores 60, Toyota's lowest parameter. Almost all of its vehicles are sold through independent dealers, and online buying remains limited compared with digital-first rivals.
What would move it: Offering a consistent online purchase path in its largest markets, with dealers handling delivery and service, would modernise the buying experience without breaking the dealer network.
The 2026 story
Toyota changed leaders in 2026. Kenta Kon, previously chief financial officer, became President and CEO in April, succeeding Koji Sato, with Akio Toyoda remaining chairman.
The year to March 2026 brought record sales revenues of JPY50.7 trillion, up 5.5%, and vehicle sales of 9.595 million. But US tariffs cut operating income by JPY1.38 trillion, pushing it down 21.5% to JPY3.77 trillion, and Toyota forecast lower profit again for fiscal 2027.
Brand architecture is also shifting. Century was spun off as a standalone ultra-luxury brand in October 2025, and Gazoo Racing is becoming a separate brand, starting with the GR GT. The risks are tariffs, the pace of the battery-electric transition and the lingering effect of group certification irregularities.

WCRC analysis
Sales revenues rose from JPY31.4 trillion to JPY50.7 trillion over five years, up 62%, with growth in every year. Operating income peaked at a record JPY5.35 trillion in fiscal 2024, a margin of 12%, then fell for two years to JPY3.77 trillion in fiscal 2026, a margin of 7%, as costs and US tariffs bit.
The table shows two stories at once. Demand for Toyota cars has grown every year, which supports its recall and first-choice scores. Profitability has proved more exposed to policy and costs, with tariffs alone taking JPY1.38 trillion from operating income in fiscal 2026. Toyota's financial strength lets it absorb that hit, but not ignore it.
Toyota is the highest-ranked volume carmaker in the WCRC World's Most Powerful 100 Brands 2026, at #32. Two premium brands, Ferrari (#10) and BMW (#29), rank higher.
