What makes Sony powerful

Sony is one of the few brands that people meet in almost every part of their entertainment life. A teenager knows it from PlayStation, a photographer from the Alpha cameras, a music fan from Sony Music and an anime fan from Crunchyroll. That reach gives Sony an Unaided Brand Recall score of 90, its joint-highest parameter, and a Brand Positioning & Recall pillar score of 79.4. Brand Extension Credibility, at 84, shows how easily the name moves between games, music, film and sensors.

The second driver is trust. Sony scores 90 on Composite Consumer Trust Score and 86 on Competitive Trust Differential, placing it among the most trusted technology brands in the WCRC World's Most Powerful 100 Brands 2026. Decades of well-made products, from audio and televisions to the image sensors where it leads, have built a reputation for engineering that the company still lives on. It also scores 69.2 on Sustainability, Governance & ESG, the 22nd-highest result in the edition.

The business behind the brand is sound. In the year to March 2026, revenue rose 3.7% to JPY12.48tn and operating income grew 13.4% to JPY1.45tn. Sony is also reshaping itself: it spun off Sony Financial Group in October 2025, agreed to move its televisions into a joint venture with TCL, and cancelled the Afeela car with Honda. Those moves sharpen the focus on entertainment and sensors, but they also test loyal customers, as the July 2026 backlash over plans to end PlayStation disc production showed. PlayStation is ranked separately in the edition, at #72.

Why Sony ranks #53

Sony's strongest WCRC results are about familiarity and trust: almost everyone knows the name, and most people who know it trust it more than its rivals.

  1. 1.02Unaided Brand Recall90

Unaided Brand Recall: Sony is a household name on every continent, carried by PlayStation, which has sold 95 million PS5 consoles, as well as by Sony Music, Sony Pictures and its cameras.

  2. 2.01Composite Consumer Trust Score90

Composite Consumer Trust Score: Sony scores 90, among the highest trust results for a technology brand in the edition, built on decades of reliable consumer electronics.

  3. 2.10Competitive Trust Differential86

Competitive Trust Differential: Sony's reputation runs ahead of most consumer-electronics peers, helped by leadership in image sensors and premium cameras such as the Alpha 7R VI launched in May 2026.

The Achilles' heel

2.07Service Recovery & Complaint Perception62

Service Recovery & Complaint Perception scores 62, Sony's lowest parameter. In July 2026 plans to phase out physical PlayStation discs from January 2028 drew community protests, following the closure of Bluepoint Games in February.

What would move it: Giving players clear guarantees on access to the games they already own, and explaining the digital transition before it happens, would rebuild goodwill with Sony's most loyal customers.

The 2026 story

Sony spent 2026 becoming a narrower company. It completed the partial spin-off and listing of Sony Financial Group in October 2025, and in March 2026 agreed to place its home-entertainment business in a joint venture with TCL, which will hold 51% and operate as BRAVIA Inc. from April 2027. On 25 March, Sony Honda Mobility cancelled the Afeela 1 and its planned SUV.

The results held up. Revenue from continuing operations rose 3.7% to JPY12.48tn in the year to 31 March 2026 and operating income grew 13.4% to JPY1.45tn. Net income from continuing operations was JPY1.03tn, though a JPY1.38tn non-cash charge on deconsolidating the financial business produced an overall net loss.

The main risk is fan goodwill. Studio closures and the planned end of PlayStation disc production prompted protests in 2026, and Sony's trust advantage depends on not testing its gamers too far.
