How the Power Score adds up
Each pillar's score multiplied by its WCRC weight. The segments sum to 74.64.
Walmart's power is scale turned into trust in a price. 'Save money, live better' has barely changed in decades, and it still works: revenue reached US$713bn in the year to January 2026, from 10,373 stores and 601 clubs in the United States and 19 other countries. That gives Walmart a Brand Positioning & Recall score of 81.8, with Positioning Clarity & Coherence and Unaided Brand Recall both at 90.
Its strongest pillar, though, is Digital Presence & Financial Soundness, at 82.1, the 17th-highest in the WCRC World's Most Powerful 100 Brands 2026 and second among retailers only to Amazon. Walmart is rated AA by S&P and Fitch and Aa2 by Moody's, earning a Financial Stability Indicator of 95, one of the highest in the edition. In the second quarter of fiscal 2027, global e-commerce sales rose 23%, advertising revenue 38% and operating income 28.8%. Walmart has quietly become a large digital marketplace and media business inside a grocery chain.
Investors noticed. On 3 February 2026, days after John Furner succeeded Doug McMillon as chief executive, Walmart's market value passed US$1 trillion, and it now trades on Nasdaq after the largest exchange transfer on record. The weakness is sustainability. Walmart scores 62.6 on Sustainability, Governance & ESG, among the lowest in the edition: it cut Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 24.6% against a 35% target for 2025, missed all of its packaging goals and used more virgin plastic three years running. Trust and service scores also trail its financial strength.
Why Walmart ranks #69
Walmart's three highest WCRC parameters are all about money and reach: credit quality few companies match, unrivalled scale and a digital business growing faster than its stores.
5.07Financial Stability Indicator95
Financial Stability Indicator: Walmart is rated AA by S&P and Fitch and Aa2 by Moody's, and earned net income of US$21.9bn in the year to January 2026.
5.09Competitive Financial Position94
Competitive Financial Position: with US$713bn of revenue, Walmart is the largest retailer and grocer in the United States, and operating income rose 28.8% in the second quarter of fiscal 2027.
5.04E-Commerce & Digital Commerce Capability90
E-Commerce & Digital Commerce Capability: global e-commerce sales grew 23% in the second quarter of fiscal 2027, and walmart.com is the second-largest e-commerce platform in the United States.
The Achilles' heel
4.09Circular Economy & Waste Reduction50
Circular Economy & Waste Reduction scores 50, Walmart's lowest parameter. Its FY2026 ESG report, published in July 2026, showed that it missed all of its 2025 packaging goals and that virgin plastic use rose for three years in a row.
What would move it: Setting new, dated packaging targets with suppliers, and using Walmart's buying power to make reusable and recycled packaging the default in its private brands, would show the same discipline it applies to price.
The 2026 story
2026 was a landmark year for Walmart. John Furner took over from Doug McMillon as chief executive around 1 February, and on 3 February Walmart became the first traditional retailer worth US$1 trillion. It had already moved its listing from the NYSE to Nasdaq in December 2025 and joined the Nasdaq-100 in January.
Trading stayed strong. In the second quarter of fiscal 2027, reported on 20 August, revenue rose 5.9% to US$187.9bn, US comparable sales grew 2.6% as higher-income shoppers spent more, and Walmart raised its guidance. Retail media and the online marketplace are now major profit drivers.
The risks sit outside the stores' tills. Walmart missed key 2025 sustainability targets, its retreat from diversity programmes drew criticism, and as the largest private employer in the world, with about 2.1 million staff, its treatment of workers stays under constant scrutiny.
