How the Power Score adds up
Each pillar's score multiplied by its WCRC weight. The segments sum to 76.51.
Michelin is a tyre company that owns a symbol of fine dining, and that unusual pairing is the heart of its power. The Michelin Man, Bibendum, has represented the brand since 1898, and the Michelin Guide's stars have become a reference point for restaurants worldwide. Together they give Michelin a Brand Positioning & Recall score of 83.8, with Positioning Clarity & Coherence and Brand Personality Coherence both at 90 and Visual Identity Distinctiveness at 88. Few industrial brands are so easy to picture.
The second source of power is conduct. Michelin scores 74.8 on Sustainability, Governance & ESG, the fifth-highest result in the WCRC World's Most Powerful 100 Brands 2026 and the best of any automotive brand. Supply Chain Ethics & Responsible Sourcing reaches 86 and Environmental Impact & Decarbonisation 82, both well above the sector norm. The company is rated A by S&P and Fitch, keeps gearing at 13% and generated EUR2.1bn of free cash flow in 2025.
The product backs up the image. Perceived Product & Service Quality scores 86, and the portfolio runs from car tyres to mining, aviation and high-tech polymer composites. The weak point is momentum. Sales fell 4.4% to EUR26.0bn in 2025 as original-equipment volumes slowed, net income dropped 12% to EUR1.7bn, and a US jury returned a US$220m verdict in December 2025 over a tyre it found defective. Consumer Trust & Sentiment, at 71.7, is the pillar where Michelin trails most of the edition.
Why Michelin ranks #43
Michelin's highest WCRC parameters all describe a brand that has said the same thing, in the same voice, with the same face, for well over a century.
1.01Positioning Clarity & Coherence90
Positioning Clarity & Coherence: Michelin has held a premium tyre and mobility position for over a century, and its portfolio, from car tyres to aviation and mining, follows that line.
1.06Brand Personality Coherence90
Brand Personality Coherence: Bibendum has expressed the brand's character consistently since 1898, on packaging, in stores and in the Michelin Guide.
1.10Visual Identity Distinctiveness88
Visual Identity Distinctiveness: the Michelin Man is one of the best-known mascots in the world, and the Guide's stars carry the name far beyond the tyre market.
The Achilles' heel
2.05Purchase Intent & Consideration Index64
WCRC flags Purchase Intent & Consideration Index, at 64, as Michelin's Achilles heel. Group sales fell 4.4% to EUR26.0bn in 2025, or 1.4% at constant exchange rates, as original-equipment demand and tyre volumes weakened.
What would move it: Turning the trust built by the Guide and Bibendum into replacement-tyre sales, with clearer consumer messages on safety and tyre life, would lift demand where Michelin controls the choice.
The 2026 story
Michelin's 2025 results set the tone for 2026. Sales fell 4.4% to EUR26.0bn, segment operating income was EUR2.9bn, a margin of 10.9%, and net income declined 12% to EUR1.7bn. Free cash flow of EUR2.1bn and single-A credit ratings kept the balance sheet strong.
Legal pressure grew. In December 2025 a New Mexico jury found a Michelin tyre defective in a fatal crash and returned a US$220m verdict. In Europe, the EU's tyre-cartel investigation continues, although the General Court partly annulled the 2024 dawn-raid decision in July 2025.
Restructuring remains a reputational risk. The closures of the Cholet and Vannes plants in France in 2024 drew criticism, and Employee Wellbeing, Equity & Employer Brand is one of Michelin's lower ESG scores. Even so, the company's sustainability record remains among the strongest in the WCRC World's Most Powerful 100 Brands 2026.
