World's Most Powerful 100 Brands 2026 · Second Global Mega Edition
#80 Shopify
Shopify is ranked #80 in the WCRC World's Most Powerful 100 Brands 2026, with a WCRC Power Score of 74.32. It is the only Canadian brand in the ranking, and its power comes from being the commerce engine behind a vast base of independent merchants, handling US$378.4bn of gross merchandise volume in 2025.
Five WCRC pillars, 50 parameters, each scored 0 to 100 against global sector peers. The pillar weights set how much each one counts toward the Power Score.

How the Power Score adds up
Each pillar's score multiplied by its WCRC weight. The segments sum to 74.32.
Shopify's power is unusual because most shoppers never see it. When someone buys from an independent brand online, there is a good chance the checkout, the payment and the store itself run on Shopify. That makes E-Commerce & Digital Commerce Capability its highest WCRC parameter by a wide margin, at 95. In 2025 merchants on its platform sold US$378.4bn of goods, up 29%. Digital Presence & Financial Soundness scores 78.1, and Product, Innovation & Delivery is its strongest pillar, at 78.6, led by Technology & Digitalisation of Delivery and Digital Innovation & Technology Adoption, both at 88.
The second source of power is growth with profit. Revenue rose 30.1% to US$11.6bn in 2025, operating income reached US$1.47bn, net income US$1.23bn and free cash flow US$2.0bn. After a hard reset in 2022, when the pandemic boom in online shopping faded and the company cut staff, Shopify has rebuilt to record results, and Future Readiness & Strategic Relevance scores 86 as it adds AI commerce tools for merchants. Its positioning is clear (Positioning Clarity & Coherence, 84): it is the platform that lets anyone start and grow a business, from a first online store to point-of-sale systems, payments and enterprise accounts. Its green shopping bag logo is widely recognised.
The weaker side is people and trust. Employee Wellbeing, Equity & Employer Brand is its lowest parameter at 58, a legacy of the 2022-23 layoffs, and Consumer Trust & Sentiment is 72.2, held back because Shopify sits behind other brands and builds little direct emotional bond with shoppers. A US privacy class action, Briskin v. Shopify, was revived by an appeals court in April 2025, and founder voting control limits governance scores. Shopify's power is infrastructure: the more merchants it carries, the harder it is to replace.
Why Shopify ranks #80
Shopify's brand power is the power of a platform. Its three strongest WCRC parameters all measure how well it builds and delivers digital commerce.
5.04E-Commerce & Digital Commerce Capability95
E-Commerce & Digital Commerce Capability: for Shopify the platform is the product, and merchants on its platform sold US$378.4bn of goods in 2025, up 29%, through online stores, checkout, payments and point of sale.
3.08Technology & Digitalisation of Delivery88
Technology & Digitalisation of Delivery: everything Shopify sells is delivered through software, from store building to payments and fulfilment tools, and its revenue grew 30.1% to US$11.6bn in 2025.
5.06Digital Innovation & Technology Adoption88
Digital Innovation & Technology Adoption: Shopify keeps extending its platform, adding AI commerce tools, payments, point-of-sale systems and enterprise offerings for merchants of every size.
The Achilles' heel
4.05Employee Wellbeing, Equity & Employer Brand58
Employee Wellbeing, Equity & Employer Brand scores 58, Shopify's lowest. Deep layoffs in 2022 and 2023, after the pandemic boom in e-commerce ended, still weigh on its standing as an employer.
What would move it: Publishing clear data on retention, pay equity and employee wellbeing, and showing stability through the next cycle, would rebuild its reputation as a place to work.
The 2026 story
2025 was Shopify's strongest year. Revenue rose 30.1% to US$11.6bn from US$8.9bn, gross merchandise volume rose 29% to US$378.4bn, operating income was US$1.47bn and free cash flow reached US$2.0bn. The company reported the results in February 2026.
The recovery from the 2022 reset is complete. Shopify has moved further into payments, point of sale and large enterprise accounts, and it is building AI tools that help merchants run their stores and sell through new channels.
The risks are legal and competitive. A privacy class action, Briskin v. Shopify, was revived by the US Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals sitting en banc in April 2025; no fine has been imposed. Shopify has no public credit rating, and its founder holds voting control.
