What makes Sephora powerful

Sephora is powerful because it owns the place where prestige beauty is discovered, online and in store. Its strongest pillar is Digital Presence & Financial Soundness, at 82.1, 17th of the 100 brands in the WCRC World's Most Powerful 100 Brands 2026. Social Media Presence & Engagement Quality scores 89, the brand's highest parameter: Sephora's tutorials, launches and creator content shape what a generation of young shoppers buys. E-commerce scores 88, because its apps, websites and stores work as one system.

The second driver is a clear idea of what Sephora is. Positioning Clarity & Coherence scores 88. Sephora sells the brands people want, plus exclusives they cannot find elsewhere, in black-and-white stores that invite people to test everything. Rhode had a record-breaking launch at Sephora in 2025, and new exclusives, including several Chinese beauty brands, kept growth going in 2026. Product, Innovation & Delivery scores 80.0 and Consumer Trust & Sentiment 76.6, both in the top 30.

The business behind the brand is growing faster than its luxury parent. LVMH's Selective Retailing division, of which Sephora is the largest part, lifted profit from recurring operations by 28% to EUR1.78bn in 2025, while LVMH as a group saw revenue fall 5%. Sephora opened about 100 stores in 2025, gained market share in many countries, and in 2026 entered Belgium and Croatia and opened its first store on the island of Ireland, in Belfast. The weak point is responsibility. Sustainability, Governance & ESG scores 66.6, pulled down by thin circularity data and an Italian competition authority probe into marketing skincare to children.

Why Sephora ranks #31

Sephora's three strongest WCRC parameters show a retailer that has turned social media and digital commerce into the core of its brand, around a position everyone understands.

  1. 5.01Social Media Presence & Engagement Quality89

Social Media Presence & Engagement Quality: Sephora's creator partnerships, tutorials and launches generate heavy organic engagement, especially among Gen Z beauty shoppers.

  2. 5.04E-Commerce & Digital Commerce Capability88

E-Commerce & Digital Commerce Capability: apps, websites and more than 2,300 stores run as one omnichannel system, and LVMH says Sephora kept investing in that strategy in 2025.

  3. 1.01Positioning Clarity & Coherence88

Positioning Clarity & Coherence: Sephora is the prestige-beauty specialist, combining sought-after brands, exclusives such as Rhode and its own Sephora Collection under one clear promise.

The Achilles' heel

4.09Circular Economy & Waste Reduction58

Circular Economy & Waste Reduction scores 58, Sephora's lowest parameter. As a retailer of third-party brands with heavy sampling and packaging, it publishes little Sephora-specific data on recycling, refills or waste.

What would move it: Publishing store-level packaging and waste targets, and scaling refill and empties-return schemes across markets, would give this score something to stand on.

The 2026 story

Sephora kept growing in 2026 while much of luxury stalled. LVMH reported that Selective Retailing, led by Sephora, grew 6% organically in the first nine months of the year and 8% in the third quarter, with Sephora gaining market share in several countries.

Expansion continued. After opening about 100 stores in 2025, Sephora entered Belgium and Croatia and opened its first store on the island of Ireland, in Belfast, in February 2026. In March it became an official partner of F1 Academy, the all-female racing series.

The main risk is the 'Sephora kids' debate. Italy's competition authority opened an investigation in 2026 into Sephora and Benefit over the use of young influencers to market skincare to children. How Sephora responds will matter for parents' trust in a brand built on young shoppers.

WCRC analysis

Selective Retailing revenue rose 56% over five years, from EUR11.8bn in 2021 to EUR18.3bn in 2025, with the fastest growth in 2022 and 2023 as stores reopened and travel returned. Revenue was flat in 2025 in reported terms but up 4% organically. Profit from recurring operations more than tripled, to EUR1.78bn.

The margin is the clearest sign of Sephora's strength. It rose from 4.5% in 2021 to 9.7% in 2025, and the 28% profit jump in 2025 came while LVMH's group revenue fell. LVMH credits Sephora with growth in both revenue and profit, which marks it as the engine of the division.
