What makes Nintendo powerful

Nintendo is powerful because it owns characters that belong to everyone. Mario, Zelda, Donkey Kong and Kirby are recognised by grandparents and children alike, and Nintendo controls both the characters and the hardware they live on. Positioning & Recall is its strongest WCRC pillar at 87.5. Its top parameter is Brand Differentiation Index at 94: while rivals compete on processing power, Nintendo competes on play, with hybrid hardware and games found nowhere else.

Trust is the second engine. Nintendo scores 82.7 on Trust & Sentiment, and Composite Consumer Trust Score reaches 92. Families buy Nintendo products with confidence that the content will be safe and the experience fun, a promise the company has kept for decades. That trust carried Switch 2 to 23.68 million units sold by 30 June 2026, and Mario Kart World sold 15.39 million copies.

In 2026 the brand also proved it can travel beyond the console. The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, released on 1 April 2026, grossed more than US$1bn worldwide, and theme-park areas extend the characters into physical places. Financially, the year to March 2026 was the biggest in Nintendo's history: net sales of JPY 2.31 trillion and net income of JPY 424bn, with no reliance on debt. The weak spot is Sustainability, Governance & ESG at 65.6, where Nintendo publishes less environmental information than most global peers.

Why Nintendo ranks #14

Nintendo's power comes from owning a distinct way to play: its own characters on its own hardware, sold to families who trust it.

  1. 1.04Brand Differentiation Index94

Brand Differentiation Index: Switch 2 is a hybrid console paired with games available nowhere else, which kept it out of the specification race and sold 23.68 million units in its first 13 months.

  2. 1.01Positioning Clarity & Coherence92

Positioning Clarity & Coherence: a family-friendly, play-first promise that has stayed stable for decades and runs through hardware, games, films and parks alike.

  3. 2.01Composite Consumer Trust Score92

Composite Consumer Trust Score: parents trust Nintendo content to be safe and well made, and Nintendo leads its media and entertainment peers on trust.

The Achilles' heel

4.01Environmental Impact & Decarbonisation60

Environmental Impact & Decarbonisation scores 60, Nintendo's lowest pillar area. Its environmental disclosure is thinner than that of most global consumer-electronics and entertainment peers.

What would move it: Publishing clear emissions targets, product energy data and progress on packaging and hardware recycling would lift this score and the wider Sustainability, Governance & ESG pillar.

The 2026 story

Nintendo had a record 2026. In the year to 31 March 2026, net sales almost doubled to JPY 2.31 trillion and operating profit rose 27.5% to JPY 360.1bn, driven by the launch of Switch 2. By 30 June the console had sold 23.68 million units.

The brand moved further into film. The Super Mario Galaxy Movie opened on 1 April 2026 and grossed more than US$1bn, repeating the success of the first Mario film. Nintendo also agreed in November 2025 to buy 80% of Bandai Namco Studios Singapore to add development capacity.

Price is the main risk. Citing a global memory-chip shortage and tariffs, Nintendo announced in May 2026 that the US price of Switch 2 would rise to US$499.99 from 1 September. Sales in Japan fell sharply after the increase, and game-key cards and device rules have raised ownership concerns among some players.

WCRC analysis

The table shows a console cycle. Net sales held near JPY 1.6-1.7 trillion from FY2022 to FY2024 as the original Switch aged, fell 30% to JPY 1.16 trillion in FY2025, then nearly doubled to a record JPY 2.31 trillion in FY2026 with the Switch 2 launch.

Margins moved the other way. Operating profit was 35% of sales in FY2022 but 15.6% in FY2026, because new hardware carries thinner margins than software sold to a mature installed base. The rebound in sales shows how quickly families return to the brand when new hardware arrives.
