What makes Tesco powerful

Tesco's power is the power of the habit of a nation. More than one pound in every four spent on groceries in Britain goes through its tills: its UK market share reached 28.5% in 2025/26, up 24 basis points in a year and 122 over three years. First-Choice Consumer Preference scores 88, Tesco's highest parameter, and Top-of-Mind Awareness 84. For millions of households the weekly shop simply means Tesco.

Its positioning is clear and hard to copy: low prices sharpened by Clubcard, which gives members cheaper prices and gives Tesco a data platform for pricing and offers. Positioning Clarity & Coherence scores 84 and Consumer Loyalty & Retention Proxy 82. The model is moving online without losing its edge. UK online sales rose 11% to more than GBP7bn and Whoosh rapid delivery sales grew 51%, lifting Technology & Digitalisation of Delivery to 80 and E-Commerce & Digital Commerce Capability to 82. Supply Chain Reliability & Availability also scores 82.

The results back the brand. Group revenue rose 5.4% to GBP73.7bn in the 53 weeks to 28 February 2026, adjusted operating profit reached GBP3.15bn and statutory profit before tax rose 8.5% to GBP2.40bn. Sustainability, Governance & ESG scores 69.4, the 21st best in the top 100, helped by a 68% cut in scope 1 and 2 emissions since 2015/16. Tesco's recovery from its 2014 accounting scandal gives Crisis Response & Reputational Resilience 78. Its weak point is its own workforce: an equal-pay claim by more than 16,000 shop workers leaves Employee Wellbeing, Equity & Employer Brand at 62.

Why Tesco ranks #94

Tesco's power comes from being the first choice of British shoppers, a value-and-loyalty positioning anchored by Clubcard, and a name that comes to mind first whenever groceries do. Brand Positioning & Recall, at 76.0, is its strongest WCRC pillar.

  1. 2.04First-Choice Consumer Preference88

First-Choice Consumer Preference: Tesco leads UK grocery with a 28.5% market share, up 122 basis points over three years. It is the brand's top score, at 88.

  2. 1.01Positioning Clarity & Coherence84

Positioning Clarity & Coherence: value prices plus Clubcard rewards have defined Tesco for years, and every channel, from superstores to Whoosh rapid delivery, carries the same promise. It scores 84.

  3. 1.03Top-of-Mind Awareness (TOMA)84

Top-of-Mind Awareness (TOMA): as the market leader with share rising for three straight years, Tesco is the default grocer for British shoppers. It scores 84.

The Achilles' heel

4.05Employee Wellbeing, Equity & Employer Brand62

Employee Wellbeing, Equity & Employer Brand scores 62, Tesco's lowest. More than 16,000 shop workers are pursuing an equal-pay claim, and on 12 May 2026 Tesco lost its bid at the Court of Appeal. It has agreed a pay deal worth more than GBP200m, a 5.1% rise.

What would move it: Resolving the equal-pay claim fairly and quickly, and being transparent about pay across store and warehouse roles, would turn its largest reputational risk into proof that it values its people.

The 2026 story

Tesco had a strong 2025/26. In the 53 weeks to 28 February 2026 group revenue rose 5.4% to GBP73.7bn, sales excluding fuel rose 6.4% to GBP67.7bn, adjusted operating profit reached GBP3.15bn and statutory profit after tax rose 9.6% to GBP1.79bn. UK market share climbed to 28.5%.

Online kept growing. UK online sales rose 11% to more than GBP7bn and Whoosh rapid delivery sales grew 51%. Tesco continued buying back shares, and its credit ratings stand at Baa3 with Moody's and BBB- with S&P, which has a positive outlook, and Fitch.

The main risk is at home. More than 16,000 shop workers are pursuing an equal-pay claim, and Tesco lost its Court of Appeal bid on 12 May 2026. With rivals competing hard on price, keeping both shoppers and staff on side will decide whether Tesco can keep gaining share.
